Jaguar

  • Jaguars live on the continents of South and Central America, even slightly extending their range into the southern United States.
  • There are nine subspecies of jaguar, but population censuses are inconclusive about the conservation status of each one.
  • Habitat desctruction and fragmentation and loss of prey are the primary reasons for the decline in jaguar populations.
  • Jaguars are easily confused with leopards but they are larger and more stocky in build, and are in fact the third largest cat in the world behind the tiger and the lion.  They also have small spots within the rosettes on their coats, while leopards have plain rosettes.
  • Jaguars prefer habitats of dense jungle and water sources, and are known for swimming like tigers.
  • The jaguar is a solitary animal and hunts at dawn and dusk by stalking and ambushing its prey.  In addition to going for the throat like most cats, the jaguar also uses its powerful jaw and bites through the skull of its prey to kill it.
  • Another complicating point between jaguars and leopards is the melanistic colormorph, the black panther.  Both black leopards and jaguars are known as black panthers, but the jaguar can still be distinguished by the rosette pattern in its fur visible in bright light, and by its stockier build.
  • Numerous Mesoamerican cultures used the jaguar as a symbol of deity, power, strength, and even as a possible communicator to the dead.

Sorry for the long sabbatical.  I'm busy.
